Aspiring Innkeepers Find New Adventure in Historic Setting

CLINTON, NY -- Life can be scripted or unpredictable, and the latter would be true for the new innkeepers of The Arbor Inn on Griffin Road, Dave and Ellen Varecka.

The former Buffalo-area couple have recently purchased the Inn from Bob and Carol Renauld, which includes the Griffin Road residence, formerly called The Arbor Inn at Griffin House, and the
Williams Street location, collectively now known as “The Arbor Inn of Clinton.”

The Vareckas will tell you, excitedly, that they are brand new to the B&B world. Their road to The Arbor Inn began unexpectedly when they were on a tour of historic homes in Buffalo and stumbled upon one home in particular that just happened to be a B&B.

“It all started as a passing joke,” Ellen recalls. “On our way out of the door I said to Dave, ‘We can do that,’ and it turned out that gorgeous B&B was for sale.”

While they didn’t go on to purchase that B&B, it did spark a new passion for the couple who were looking for an adventure after retiring. Dave was a principal partner of an architectural firm; Ellen
had an extensive career in business operations and human resource management.

“We were ready to leave our corporate lives,” Dave adds. “We just weren’t ready to settle down.”

The couple describes their discovery of The Arbor Inn as rather serendipitous. They arrived in Clinton on a typical snowy, cold upstate New York night. Ellen says when they walked into the warm and inviting Arbor Inn, it felt like home.

They also explain that they were attracted to the Inn because of its unique setting. “We like that it has rural ambience but is still close to urbanlike amenities,” Dave adds.

Returning guests won’t notice any striking differences to The Arbor Inn or William Street Lodging. Dave and Ellen say they don’t plan on making any major changes other than enhancing the common area, and adding their own personal touches.

The couple also sees being new to the area as an advantage. They plan to immerse themselves in the college, village, and business communities.

“We see ourselves as being cheerleaders, advocates for the local colleges. Having grown children and the experience of being a college parent, we understand where they are coming from,” Ellen explains. “We find this thrilling and exciting that we’ll be even closer to our own family near Syracuse.”

On August 1, Dave and Ellen opened the doors of The Arbor Inn on Griffin Road and William Street Lodging as new innkeepers. They plan to continue catering to guests visiting Hamilton College, Colgate University, Utica College, and all upstate New York attractions. They also plan to promote to business travelers with special, corporate and extended rates.

The Renaulds opened The Arbor Inn as a B&B in 2000. The first guest suite at Williams Street Lodging opened in 2009.

The Arbor Inn on Griffin Road has two guest rooms and three suites. For comfort and convenience they offer complimentary high speed wireless and internet access, central air conditioning, ceiling fans in every room, and a full breakfast menu seven days a week.

The luxuriously appointed Williams Street Lodging, #8 and #12, are ideal options for business travelers, extendedstay guests, or families up to four persons. Complimentary wireless internet access is available at both suites.

The Arbor Inn is located less than one half mile from the Hamilton College campus, 25 minutes from Colgate University, and just 10 minutes from the New York State Thruway. Williams Street Lodging is located at 8 & 12 Williams Street, in the heart of the village.
